Diary 9.5.1883

Wednesday May 9

Lat. 29.43S Long. 35.21W distance 135 miles.
We did not get up so very early this morning, it is a fine morning. Mr Hutton is worse, he died about 10:30. It has been a very solemn day today, they buried him at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, all the sailors went first, then all the Bradford people, then all the policemen. They had him laid on a board overed with a cloth then the Doctor read the funeral service and they sang “Abide With Me” and “Nearer My God To Thee”, it was very solemn. They opened a square place in the side of the ship and let him slip into the water. He leaves a wife and one girl about fourteen years old.
