Diary 5.5.1883

Saturday May 5

Got up a 6 o’clock, the birth of a fine baby boy, the mother is a Scotch woman of the name of Tallow. The women are carrying it all up and down the ship, the captain gave it five shillings and all the officers gave it something. It is a great pity for them as they now have two who cannot walk and she will not be able to rest during the day hours there is such noise. Emmeline is getting very friendly with the Captain, he took her in the cabin and gave her some sugar and a slice of bread with marmalade on it, she was alright she put the sugar in her pocket. 142 miles.
