Diary 9.7.1883

Monday July 9

Up at 5:30 this morning, we are going in a steamer (the A.S.N. James Paterson) to Bundaberg so we are busy getting ready. We arrived there about 3 o’clock.

The Diary finishes with the arrival in Australia.
Emily Ann and John Edwin with Ruth Emmeline moved from Bundaberg to Brisbane, then to Melbourne where they settled. Mary Ellen was born on 1st October 1883 nearly 3 months after the family arrived in Australia. In total they had seven children.

  1. a wonderful story, thank you for sharing with us. In a way I am sorry they have landed. Gatherings around the daily 'blog'reading have become a much looked forward to part of the day.

  2. Thank you for sharing this fascinating diary of the Nairnshire trip. I found the diary, during its daily publishing, while researching the Nairnshire as my grandfather was also a passenger on that trip to Bundaberg. Do you have any further information, eg was the trip sponsored by an organisation? why Bundaberg? The Bundaberg Genealogical Society is in the process of publishing a small book about the ships that came directly to Bundaberg, including the Nairnshire, have you considered making your info available to them and thereby to other family history seekers. By the way, the Foster family are not listed as such as passengers of the Nairnshire although there is a W Foster, did they travel under a different name? Many thanks, Woody

  3. Woody,
Great that there's another descendant out there. I don't have much further information only suppositions, I feel there was some form of assisted migration, the fact that there were many from Bradford, they used Barron the shipping agent, and departed from Glasgow. Also from the Bundaberg Mail in 1926, the tone of the article suggests Bundaberg wanted/advertised for settlers, their population recieved a stimulus with the Nairnshire. Don't know what passenger list you have, but the one in the Mail article only names 200 of the 341 passengers, believe thoses who left the district early like the Fosters were not named. Finally I'm not the owner of the diary, and only had permission to blog it. Glad you enjoyed it.
