Saturday April 7
Got up at 7 had to take the bedding up on deck to air and five men had to wash out below deck, they got a bottle of porter each, I shall have to take my turn soon, the wind is still fair we have run 180 miles, the distance from San Anotino Island 445 miles which is right ahead. We are to have a concert tonight and dancing after.
the first time, one of our small wood boxes had got knocked about a great deal, the currant loaf and biscuits and parlin look very tempting after living on salt pork so much, the wind still keeps good, the distance run 175 miles, there was a great bustle with the boxes this morning.
Thursday April 5
Got up at 7 o’clock had breakfast of porridge and sugar but had to wait till 2 o’clock for dinner which consisted of soup and pork with potatoes, I think by the time we get to Bundaberg we shall be able to grunt like a pig, we had a good sail today the distance run is 190 miles, we are 790 miles from San Anotino Island (Santo Antao), the wind is still very good and I sincerely hope it will still go on as I am getting tired of having nothing to do, it would be grand to work a few hours in the garden at Frizinghall (see below) making ready for the summer crop.

Tuesday 3
Up all day, we made a potato pie for dinner, there is what is called a mess, that is so many persons in a mess there is 8½ with Emmeline in our mess, Mr & Mrs Hebdon are in our mess so we joined for a pie, you have so much for each person every day and if you want to make anything instead of a pudding you can, so we made some buns instead of a suet pudding, we have porridge every morning and plenty of boiled pork and soup and tinned beef, we have to be up by 7 every morning and all wash ourselves on deck before breakfast, there is a bathroom, we have all our meals on deck since we got over our sickness, it is very close downstairs and so many that there is not much room for anything.
The remains of historical features are scattered throughout the area which reflect early gold mining activity and European settlement, including Merlo Homestead, an original homestead now submerged under the lake and only visible in times of drought. For the literary minded try 'Secrets of Walden rising' by Allan Baillie, which has great depiction of the old gold mining town of Walden rising up out of a dam's waters during a drought.
